OpenAI will cover infrastructure and electric service costs for its planned $20 billion data center in Effingham County, Georgia, Southern Company said. The agreement also includes up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response.
OpenAI to Cover Power Costs for $20 Billion Georgia Data Center

Southern Company said in a press release that OpenAI will cover the full infrastructure and electric service costs for its planned $20 billion data center project in Effingham County, Georgia.

The company said OpenAI will also provide financial assurances under rules approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission. The agreement includes up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response, which would reduce power use when demand is highest.

The project is planned for a 1,400 acre site at the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub, about 12 miles from the port of Savannah. Local officials approved a 50% property tax abatement for 15 years.

Georgia Power is expected to serve the site. The data center is projected to use 3.2 gigawatts of energy within four years.
