European Commission to Pilot AI Literacy Certificate in 2027
The European Commission said in an announcement that it will pilot an AI Literacy Certificate for learners from the 2027/28 school year as part of its Education and Skills Package.
The certificate will use the EU-OECD AI Literacy Framework for primary and secondary education, launched in June 2026. The framework covers four areas: engaging with AI, creating with AI, managing AI and shaping AI.
The package also provides capacity building and multilingual training resources for students and teachers. It states that schools should use AI only when educationally justified and under teacher control. The measures are not binding, and Member States will decide how to implement them.
