Verizon and Ericsson Plan Nationwide AI RAN Automation Rollout

Verizon will deploy Ericsson Intelligent Controller across its US network during 2026 to support AI applications that automate radio access network optimization.

Verizon and Ericsson will deploy Ericsson Intelligent Controller across Verizon's US network during 2026, the companies said in a press release. The controller will support AI applications, known as rApps, that automate radio access network optimization.

A field deployment of Ericsson's Advanced Antenna System Cell Shaper rApp produced gains of up to 8.9% in downlink data radio bearer throughput and up to 8% in uplink user equipment throughput. The application continuously adjusts Massive MIMO cell coverage and traffic distribution.

Verizon also deployed its own rApp on the controller to manage handovers from LTE to standalone 5G for fixed wireless access devices without manual intervention after failures. The company plans to test and deploy additional Ericsson and internally developed rApps for anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and network optimization.
