Southern Company Joins Trump Ratepayer Pledge as AI Power Demand Grows

Southern Company joined President Donald Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge and cited OpenAI's planned $20 billion Georgia project as an example of customer cost protections for AI power demand.

Southern Company has joined President Donald Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge as AI and advanced technology projects increase power demand in the Southeast, the utility announced in a press release.

The company said its two largest subsidiaries, Georgia Power and Alabama Power, have multiyear base rate freezes in place. It also cited an early 2026 loan package of up to $26.5 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy, which it said is estimated to generate $7 billion in customer benefits by lowering energy costs and strengthening the grid.

Southern Company pointed to OpenAI's planned $20 billion project in Effingham County, Georgia, as an example of its approach. The company said OpenAI has agreed to cover the full infrastructure and electric service costs needed for the facility and provide financial assurances under rules approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission.

OpenAI has also agreed to support the grid with up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response. Southern Company said this would let the facility lower power use during periods of high demand.
