Sharjah Wheat Project Achieves Record Protein Levels in Desert Conditions
Sharjah has reported major progress in its desert wheat cultivation project, producing crops with protein levels nearly twice the global soft wheat average, announced in a press release. Second generation plants recorded eight spikes per plant, exceeding the international benchmark of seven, and reached a protein content of 19.3 percent, placing the variety among the highest globally.
The initiative is part of Sharjah’s broader effort to develop climate resilient crops suitable for arid regions. The project uses an integrated system that combines precision farming, artificial intelligence, ground sensors, and satellite imagery to manage irrigation and reduce water loss. According to Dr. Fadel ElZubi of the Geneva Centre for Studies, this model demonstrates how technology and scientific research can improve agricultural productivity and sustainability in challenging environments.
Researchers involved in the program estimate that precision farming technologies could increase productivity by up to 40 percent while reducing water use by as much as 30 percent. The results position Sharjah as a regional example for developing crops adapted to harsh climates.
