OpenAI Plans $750 Billion Infrastructure Spending Through 2030
OpenAI will increase its planned infrastructure spending to $750 billion through 2030, about 25 percent more than was projected earlier this year, according to The Wall Street Journal. The expansion raises the company’s already substantial commitment to data center development as it scales up computing capacity.
The first major project under this budget is Project Camellia, a $20 billion data center campus in Georgia. The 1,400-acre site will be located northwest of Savannah and is expected to draw 3.2 gigawatts of power from Georgia Power. The first generating capacity is expected to be available between 2028 and 2032.
OpenAI has agreed to pay the full infrastructure and electric service costs associated with the project. The Georgia Public Service Commission requires large new power users to bear these costs directly, preventing them from being passed on to other customers. The company has also committed to reduce its power draw by up to one gigawatt during high demand periods.
The Effingham County government has approved a 50 percent property tax abatement for 15 years for Project Camellia. OpenAI has not disclosed how the facility will be powered, though filings from Georgia Power suggest that much of the supply will come from natural gas, with the remainder from solar and battery sources.
Construction timelines have not been finalized, though OpenAI has recently hired Brett Mayo to lead data center development. Mayo previously managed large-scale construction at xAI, which completed the Colossus data center in Memphis.
