Instructure Introduces Project Athena, an AI Study Coach for Canvas

July 23, 2026
Instructure has unveiled Project Athena, an AI study coach in development that connects directly to Canvas LMS to deliver personalized study support grounded in course content. The tool will create quizzes, study guides, and coaching prompts aligned with each student’s learning objectives and assignments.

Instructure has introduced Project Athena, an AI study coach currently under development as part of Instructure Foundry, a new internal venture focused on innovation, announced in a press release. The tool will integrate with Canvas to deliver personalized study support based on students' course materials, assignments, and assessments.

Project Athena is designed to generate quizzes, study guides, and coaching prompts that align with each course’s learning objectives. By using information available through a student’s Canvas account, Athena aims to keep study guidance connected to the classroom context. It will also analyze confidence levels, identify areas where students need more help, and adapt difficulty as students progress.

Instructure has partnered with Hinds Community College to provide Athena to 7,000 students following a pilot program. The company stated that Athena reflects its approach to responsible AI use, with student data privacy protected and no external model training on student conversations. Access to Canvas data will occur through read-only permissions governed by existing user authorizations.

Project Athena is the first product to launch through Instructure Foundry, which allows small teams to test new concepts and bring solutions to educators and institutions more quickly while maintaining the stability of the core ecosystem. Institutions interested in participating in further testing can find more details through the project’s official site.
