ChatGPT Search Sees Rapid Growth in Europe

OpenAI's ChatGPT search feature has seen significant growth in Europe, with monthly active recipients rising from 11.2 million to 41.3 million over six months.

OpenAI has reported a significant increase in the use of its ChatGPT search feature in Europe. According to data from OpenAI Ireland Limited, the feature had approximately 41.3 million average monthly active recipients for the six-month period ending March 31, 2025, up from 11.2 million in the previous six-month period ending October 31, 2024.

This growth in user engagement comes as OpenAI complies with the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates transparency and accountability for large online platforms. The DSA requires platforms with over 45 million average monthly recipients to allow users to opt out of recommendation systems and profiling, share data with researchers and authorities, and undergo external audits. ChatGPT search is approaching this threshold, which may soon subject it to these additional requirements.

Despite its growth, ChatGPT search still trails behind major search engines like Google, which handles significantly more searches. However, the increasing adoption of AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT indicates a shift in user preferences towards more interactive and up-to-date information retrieval methods.
