Generative AI Usage in Steam Games Surges 800%
The number of games on Steam disclosing the use of generative AI has surged by 800% in 2025, according to a study by Totally Human. This increase translates to nearly 8,000 titles, up from around 1,000 the previous year, representing 7% of Steam's total library.
The study highlights that 60% of these games use generative AI for visual asset generation, including characters and backgrounds. Other applications include audio, text, marketing materials, and code generation. Despite the voluntary nature of these disclosures, the actual number of games using AI is likely higher.
This trend is particularly notable among smaller studios, but it raises questions about the potential for larger publishers to adopt these technologies for cost-cutting purposes. As the technology becomes more refined and accessible, its integration into game development is expected to continue growing.
