Dutch Privacy Watchdog Urges Swift AI Regulation

March 09, 2026
The Dutch Data Protection Authority has called on the new government to quickly establish clear rules for artificial intelligence, warning that current oversight mechanisms are insufficient to prevent unsafe and discriminatory algorithms.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) has urged the government to act quickly on setting clear regulations for artificial intelligence, according to Anadolu Agency. The authority warned that existing laws offer limited protection against unsafe and discriminatory algorithms, leaving oversight bodies unable to intervene effectively.

Chair Aleid Wolfsen noted that five years after the childcare benefits scandal, lessons have been learned but enforcement remains weak due to the absence of strict AI rules. The AP has created a nine-part “barometer” to monitor AI’s societal impact, which has raised four red flags since its launch. These include inadequate registration of AI systems, lack of incident tracking, unclear oversight powers, and absence of technical standards.

The watchdog also expressed concern over young people's exposure to AI chatbots, warning of risks such as addiction and psychological harm. It identified deepfakes, AI-driven fraud, and the growing gap between AI security measures and technological advances as major threats.

The authority said some organizations are avoiding compliance by labeling high-risk AI systems as regular algorithms. Starting next year, such systems in sectors like healthcare and crime detection will be subject to detailed requirements covering documentation, risk management, and bias prevention.
