Anthropic has partnered with the Government of Rwanda and African training provider ALX to deploy Chidi, an AI learning companion built on Claude, to hundreds of thousands of learners across Africa. The initiative includes teacher training in Rwanda and continent-wide integration into ALX programs.

Anthropic has announced a partnership with the Government of Rwanda and ALX to deploy Chidi, an AI-powered learning companion built on the Claude model, across Africa. The initiative aims to bring AI-supported education to hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and young professionals on the continent.

In Rwanda, the program will be integrated into the national education system through the Ministries of Education and ICT & Innovation. Up to 2,000 teachers and a group of civil servants will receive training on using Claude to support lesson planning, classroom practice, and administrative tasks. Graduates of the pilot will gain one year of access to Claude tools, including Claude Pro for individuals and Claude Code for developer teams, while universities will explore Claude for Education.

The Rwandan government views the project as part of its Vision 2050 strategy to build a knowledge-based economy. The initiative also establishes a joint working group between the partners to document outcomes and guide Rwanda’s national AI education policy.

Beyond Rwanda, ALX will roll out Chidi through its technology training programs across the continent, reaching more than 200,000 learners. Chidi is designed as a “Socratic mentor,” guiding users through questions rather than providing direct answers, to help develop problem-solving and analytical skills. Since its initial rollout, students have logged thousands of learning sessions, with most reporting positive experiences.

Anthropic will cover technical costs for the deployment, while ALX manages training and implementation. The Government of Rwanda will provide policy support and institutional access. The collaboration is positioned as one of Africa’s largest AI education deployments, aligning public and private partners to build AI literacy and digital skills at scale.
