Geoffrey Hinton Praises Alpha School as Model for Responsible AI in Education

February 11, 2026
Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton has recognized Alpha School for its use of AI in personalized learning, describing it as a rare example of technology that makes him optimistic about artificial intelligence.

Nobel laureate and AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton has praised Alpha School as a standout example of artificial intelligence being used for positive impact, announced in a press release. Hinton, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his foundational work in machine learning, described Alpha School as a "beacon of optimism" in an era where he often warns of AI’s risks.

In a BBC interview, Hinton highlighted Alpha School’s AI-driven personalized learning system, which adapts to each student’s pace and style. He noted that the approach allows teachers to focus more on mentoring and social development rather than administrative tasks like grading or lecturing.

Alpha School’s model uses AI tutors to help students complete core academics in about two hours per day, with the rest of the time spent on collaborative projects and personal development. The school reports that its students rank in the top 1–2% nationally on standardized tests.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Alpha School operates campuses across several U.S. states, including Arizona, California, Florida, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, and Texas, and plans further expansion in response to growing demand.
