Walmart Partners with OpenAI to Enable Shopping Through ChatGPT
Walmart has announced a partnership with OpenAI that will let customers shop for Walmart and Sam’s Club products directly through ChatGPT, announced in a press release. The integration will allow users to browse and purchase groceries, household items, and other goods using ChatGPT’s conversational interface with an instant checkout option.
Customers will be able to link their Walmart accounts to ChatGPT and complete purchases by pressing a “buy” button within the app. The feature, which supports products from both Walmart and third-party sellers, is expected to roll out later this fall.
The system will enable what Walmart describes as “agentic commerce,” where AI anticipates and plans for customer needs rather than reacting to searches. Sam’s Club members will also be able to use the feature for meal planning and reordering essentials.
Walmart continues to expand its use of AI across operations, including its generative AI shopping assistant Sparky and internal adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI Certifications for employee training.
