Volvo and Boliden Complete Autonomous Transport Project at Garpenberg Mine
Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Boliden have completed the autonomous transport project at Boliden's Garpenberg site in Sweden, announced in a press release. The project represents the first step under their 2023 Memorandum of Understanding and marks a major milestone in their ongoing partnership.
As part of the project, nearly 700,000 tonnes of rock fill were autonomously moved from an on-site quarry to reinforce and raise a local dam wall. Volvo's autonomous haulage system completed more than 11,000 transport cycles and covered approximately 56,000 kilometers during the operation.
The transport was executed using Volvo Autonomous Solutions' Autona / earth platform, which integrates the autonomous Volvo FH truck with a virtual driver, infrastructure, operational support, and maintenance services. Delivered as Transport as a Service, the system allows autonomous technology to be incorporated into existing mining operations while Volvo Autonomous Solutions manages technical and regulatory aspects.
The Garpenberg project establishes a platform for continued collaboration between Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Boliden, supporting future autonomous transport initiatives in mining environments.
