Tsinghua University Issues AI Use Framework for Teaching and Research

December 01, 2025
Tsinghua University has released its first university-wide framework governing the use of artificial intelligence in education and research, outlining ethical standards and practical guidelines for faculty and students.

Tsinghua University has released its first comprehensive framework for the use of artificial intelligence across teaching and research, announced in a press release. The document, titled *Guiding Principles for the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Education*, sets out systematic guidance for responsible AI use throughout the university.

The framework is organized into three sections: General Provisions, Teaching and Learning, and Theses, Dissertations and Practical Achievements. It establishes five core principles—responsibility, compliance and integrity, data security, prudence and critical thinking, and fairness and inclusiveness. These emphasize that AI should support, not replace, human-led teaching and research.

Instructors are required to define how AI may be used in each course and to explain the guidelines to students at the start of the semester. Students can use AI as a learning aid but cannot copy or paraphrase AI-generated content for academic submissions. For graduate research, supervisors must oversee AI use to ensure originality and prevent misconduct.

Tsinghua developed the framework through collaboration among academic and administrative departments beginning in 2024. The university plans to promote the principles through its AI literacy platform and workshops, aiming to build a sustainable model for responsible AI integration in education.
