East African Community adopts regional AI strategy and university training plan
The East African Community endorsed regional strategies for AI and digital transformation, according to Eye Radio. Ministers approved the measures during a sectoral council meeting held from October 27 to 31 in Kampala, Uganda.
The council urged partner states to consider adding foundational AI training to undergraduate programs across academic disciplines. The module will cover basic knowledge, practical uses and responsible use, while the Inter University Council for East Africa will prepare a regional implementation framework.
Ministers also approved plans for certification benchmarks covering the use of AI in Kiswahili and a Regional Artificial Intelligence Network of Universities. Three additional instruments address the use of AI in teacher education, including curricula, institutional policies and professional conduct.
