WHO Europe Member States Adopt AI Health Roadmap Through 2033

Oct 29, 2026
The 53 member states of the WHO European Region adopted a shared roadmap for integrating artificial intelligence into health systems through 2033.

The 53 member states of the World Health Organization European Region unanimously adopted its first roadmap for artificial intelligence in health, the organization announced on its website. The plan covers 2026 to 2033 and provides a shared approach for integrating AI into health systems across Europe and Central Asia.

The roadmap focuses on four areas: governance and leadership, ethical and legal frameworks, data and digital infrastructure, and capacity building and implementation. It calls for national strategies, clear institutional responsibilities, safeguards throughout the AI life cycle, secure data access, interoperability, workforce training and evaluation.

WHO Europe based the roadmap on a 2025 regional assessment that included responses from 50 of its 53 member states. The plan includes an implementation guide for countries at different levels of digital and AI maturity. Member states also supported creating a new WHO office focused on evidence, technical assistance, capacity building and knowledge exchange for health related AI.
