Trump Considers Government Stake in Leading AI Firms
President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is considering taking a government stake in leading artificial intelligence companies, according to The Washington Post. He stated that leaders of "all the big" AI firms will meet at the White House as early as next week to discuss the proposal.
The idea follows earlier moves by the Trump administration to acquire stakes in major companies such as Intel. Trump described the concept as a partnership between the government and the American public, allowing citizens to benefit directly from the success of AI companies.
The discussions come as OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX prepare for public listings. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has been in talks with the administration since 2025 about donating equity to the government to create a "Public Wealth Fund," an idea the company outlined in April. The fund would allow citizens to share in the financial returns of AI sector growth.
Senator Bernie Sanders has also proposed a similar plan for the federal government to hold stakes in major AI companies through a sovereign wealth fund. Trump said meetings with AI executives will take place soon to explore how such participation could be structured.
