Microsoft Trains Sales Team to Undercut OpenAI and Anthropic Offerings

July 16, 2026
Microsoft executives have instructed sales staff to highlight perceived weaknesses in competing AI products from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others, emphasizing lower costs and stronger security in Microsoft’s own systems, according to Bloomberg.

Microsoft is training its sales team to emphasize shortcomings in products from OpenAI and Anthropic, according to Bloomberg. The company held an internal meeting to outline a sales strategy for the new fiscal year focused on positioning its AI offerings as more affordable, secure, and comprehensive than rival systems.

Executive Vice President Jay Parikh told staff that Microsoft offers a complete system rather than isolated components, encouraging salespeople to communicate that message across markets. Copilot Executive Vice President Jacob Andreou presented comparisons between Microsoft’s Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude models, claiming that Claude performed slower, with lower accuracy and fewer integrated security features.

Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella also addressed the group, noting that one of the company’s focuses for the year would be cost monitoring and the ability to use less expensive AI models. He cited customer examples including Unilever, which he said achieved major projected savings using Microsoft’s AI platform.

Bloomberg reported that the sessions continued over two days and included recognition for top-performing sales staff as well as updates on Microsoft’s approach to competing in the expanding corporate AI market.
