Study Finds Most Patients Combine AI With Other Health Sources

Sep 16, 2026
A Luth Research study found that about 80% of patients who use AI for health information also consult other sources, particularly health information websites.

Luth Research says in an announcement that about 80% of patients who use AI for health information also consult other sources. Its AI Patient Journey Study combined digital tracking of 1,538 consumers with a survey of 537 patients who had used AI for health information during the previous year.

Health information websites were the most common companion source, used by six in 10 AI users. The study found that 47% use AI to explore a doctor's explanation in more detail, while 44% said asking AI is easier than asking their physician.

Patients relied more on established health websites when preparing for appointments or making treatment decisions. People who combined AI with other sources spent three times longer researching chronic conditions than those who used only AI, while patients diagnosed for 11 years or longer were 27% more likely to combine sources.
