SoftBank has acquired Foxconn's Ohio electric vehicle plant to advance its $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure initiative, repurposing the site for data center use.

SoftBank Group Corp. has acquired the Ohio electric vehicle plant from Foxconn to further its Stargate data center project. The acquisition is part of a $500 billion initiative aimed at establishing a network of AI infrastructure across the United States.

The Ohio facility, originally operated by General Motors and later sold to Lordstown Motors, will be repurposed as a major data center hub. This move is a strategic effort by SoftBank to lay the groundwork for the Stargate project, which is backed by major tech players including OpenAI and Oracle.

The plant was purchased for $375 million and will be used to produce AI servers, potentially utilizing custom chips from SoftBank's recent acquisitions. This development is expected to create over 100,000 jobs in the U.S. and shift the balance of AI infrastructure away from global competitors.
