Salt Lake City School District Adopts Edia Learning AI Attendance System

June 01, 2026
Salt Lake City School District has partnered with Edia Learning to implement an AI-powered attendance system aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism from 28% to 10% by 2029. The system uses multilingual text-based communication to engage families and provide real-time attendance insights for educators.

The Salt Lake City School District has selected Edia Learning to provide an AI powered attendance system, according to a press release. The partnership aims to reduce chronic absenteeism from 28 percent to 10 percent by 2029, restoring thousands of instructional days to students.

Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10 percent or more of the school year, is a major factor in long term academic challenges. The district serves more than 18,000 students, with 59 percent identifying as students of color, 48 percent economically disadvantaged, and over 80 languages spoken across the community. Last year, 29 percent of students were chronically absent, each missing nearly a month of instruction.

Edia’s platform uses AI to conduct two way SMS conversations with families, automatically detecting the preferred language from more than 100 options. The system contacts families within minutes of an absence to collect the reason and shares attendance data, reported reasons, and conversation insights through dashboards accessible to counselors, administrators, and teachers.
