The New York Times has approved the use of AI tools for its editorial and product teams, according to Semafor. The initiative includes the introduction of an internal AI tool named Echo, designed to assist in summarizing articles and other editorial tasks.

The Times has outlined specific guidelines for AI usage, encouraging staff to use these tools for generating SEO headlines, suggesting edits, and conducting research. However, the guidelines caution against using AI to draft or significantly revise articles or input confidential information.

Approved AI programs for use include GitHub Copilot for coding, Google's Vertex AI for product development, and OpenAI's non-ChatGPT API, among others. The Times is also exploring AI applications for digitally voiced articles and translations.

Despite the enthusiasm for AI integration, some staff members have expressed concerns about potential impacts on creativity and accuracy. The Times is currently involved in a legal dispute with OpenAI over alleged copyright infringements related to AI training on its content.
