Spear AI Secures $2.3M for AI Threat Detection in Submarines
Spear AI, a Washington-based startup founded by Navy veterans, has raised $2.3 million to enhance AI-powered threat detection for U.S. Navy submarines, announced in a press release. The funding round was led by Cortical Ventures and Scare the Bear.
Spear AI specializes in processing passive acoustic data collected by underwater listening devices. This data, which includes sounds from rain squalls, whales, and potential enemy vessels, is notoriously difficult for traditional AI systems to interpret. The company is developing both hardware and software solutions to prepare this data for AI analysis, aiming to differentiate between benign ocean noise and potential threats.
The startup's product offerings include sensors that can be deployed on buoys or vessels and a software platform that labels and organizes incoming audio data. This approach has already secured Spear AI a $6 million contract with the U.S. Navy for its data-labeling software.
With the new funding, Spear AI plans to double its team of 40 employees to support government contracts and explore commercial applications, such as monitoring undersea pipelines and internet cables.
