Runway, renowned for its video-generating AI models, has raised $308 million in a Series D funding round. General Atlantic led the round, with participation from Fidelity Management & Research Company, Baillie Gifford, Nvidia, and SoftBank. The funds will be allocated towards AI research, hiring, and expanding Runway Studios, the company's film and animation production arm.

Runway offers a suite of AI media tools, including video- and image-generating models, and faces competition from companies like OpenAI and Google. Recently, Runway released Gen-4, a video-generating model capable of creating consistent characters and environments across scenes. The company aims to achieve $300 million in annualized revenue this year.

However, Runway is currently involved in a lawsuit concerning the use of copyrighted artwork for training its models. The company argues that the fair use doctrine protects it from legal repercussions.
