OpenAI will retire ChatGPT Classic and combine Chat with Work
OpenAI will retire the ChatGPT Classic desktop app on 30 January 2027, according to 9to5Mac. The company will also begin testing a combined Chat and Work interface with a small group of users in the coming weeks.
Chat history from the Classic app will transfer to the newer desktop app. The combined interface will let users move from conversations to tasks involving files, plugins, websites, presentations, and web actions, while Codex will remain separate within the app. OpenAI president Greg Brockman had called the new ChatGPT interface "kind of a mess" and said the company hoped to fold the Work tab into regular ChatGPT by the end of the year.
OpenAI will also combine ChatGPT and Codex usage allowances for paid plans in December. Model choice and task complexity will determine usage, while Instant chats will not count toward the shared allowance.
