OpenAI to combine ChatGPT and Codex usage limits in December

Nov 1, 2026
From December, Plus, Pro and Business plans will share one token based usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex. Instant chat will not count toward it.

OpenAI says on an updated support page that, starting in December, the usage allowance of Plus, Pro and Business plans will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex. The change comes as the company brings the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience.

Usage for both products will be measured in tokens. How much of the allowance a request uses depends on the model and the task, and more advanced models and complex tasks generally use more. Instant chat will not draw from the allowance.

OpenAI says it expects most users will not need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now. Users will see their combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings under Usage. At the limit, they can wait for a reset, upgrade their plan or buy credits.

The Decoder notes that ChatGPT users currently choose between two operating modes and 11 model settings, and that OpenAI recently doubled usage limits for its higher priced plans.
