NVIDIA and the U.S. National Science Foundation have announced a partnership to develop open AI models aimed at advancing scientific research in the United States.

NVIDIA and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) have announced a partnership to develop open AI models to advance scientific research across the United States. This collaboration supports the NSF's Mid-Scale Research Infrastructure project, known as Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science (OMAI), led by the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2).

The initiative aims to create a national, fully open AI ecosystem to drive scientific discovery and advance AI technology. NVIDIA will provide its HGX B300 systems and AI Enterprise software platform to support the development of these models. The partnership aligns with the White House AI Action Plan, emphasizing the importance of AI-enabled scientific innovation to maintain U.S. leadership in global AI development.

The project will focus on developing domain-specific large language models (LLMs) trained on scientific literature, enabling researchers to process and analyze data more efficiently. The models will be fully open, with transparent training data, code, and evaluation methods, setting a new standard for openness in AI for science.

NSF and NVIDIA's combined investment of $152 million will support research teams from several universities, including the University of Washington and the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The initiative is expected to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and enhance the U.S.'s global leadership in science and technology.
