Microsoft Invests $33 Billion in Neoclouds for AI Capacity
Microsoft Corporation has committed $33 billion to neocloud providers, including Nebius Group and CoreWeave, to address a shortage in AI data center capacity, according to Bloomberg. This strategic move allows Microsoft to free up its own server farms to offer AI services to customers.
The most significant deal within this investment is a $19.4 billion agreement with Nebius, which grants Microsoft access to over 100,000 of NVIDIA's latest GB300 chips. This arrangement is designed to support Microsoft's internal teams working on large language models and consumer AI assistants.
By leveraging neoclouds, Microsoft can quickly scale its AI infrastructure without the logistical challenges of building new data centers. This approach also provides financial flexibility, allowing Microsoft to categorize some costs as operational expenses, which can benefit cash flow and profit reporting.
