Meta to Use AI Chat Data for Targeted Ads on Facebook and Instagram
Meta Platforms, Inc. will start using data from user interactions with its AI products to target ads on Facebook and Instagram, effective December 16. This update, according to Bloomberg, will not apply to users in the UK, EU, and South Korea due to privacy regulations.
The new policy allows Meta to leverage conversations with its AI chatbot to enhance its advertising capabilities. For instance, if a user discusses hiking with the chatbot, they might see ads for hiking gear on their social media feeds. This change is part of Meta's broader strategy to integrate its AI investments with its core advertising business.
Meta's AI chatbot, which has over a billion monthly users, will serve as a significant source of data for this initiative. However, conversations involving sensitive topics such as religious views or health will not be used for ad targeting. Users will be notified of these changes starting October 7, but there will be no option to opt out of the data usage for ad personalization.
