Mercedes-Benz Launches Athos Silicon for Autonomous Vehicle Chips
Mercedes-Benz has launched Athos Silicon, a new chip company focused on developing energy-efficient semiconductors for autonomous vehicles, as announced in a press release. Based in Santa Clara, California, Athos Silicon is a spin-off from Mercedes-Benz's Silicon Valley research arm and aims to deliver safer, more power-efficient system-on-chips (SoCs) for the automotive and mobility sectors.
Athos Silicon's flagship innovation, the Polaris SoC, utilizes a chiplet-based design with UCIe (Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express) standards for seamless integration. This approach reduces energy consumption significantly, making it ideal for battery-constrained electric vehicles and drones. The company plans to collaborate with multiple carmakers, positioning itself as a neutral player in the chiplet ecosystem.
Mercedes-Benz retains a 20% stake in Athos Silicon, ensuring alignment while allowing the new company to operate independently. Athos Silicon is set to raise venture capital to fuel its growth and expand its reach beyond Mercedes-Benz, potentially disrupting existing suppliers in the autonomous vehicle space.
