Google to Sign EU's AI Code of Practice
Google has announced its decision to sign the European Union's Code of Practice for artificial intelligence, according to the Financial Times. This move comes as the EU seeks to enforce its AI Act, which is considered one of the strictest regulatory frameworks for AI globally.
The Code of Practice outlines guidelines for the safe use of AI, including legal obligations related to copyright protections and transparency in AI model training. Google's President of Global Affairs, Kent Walker, expressed hope that the Code would enhance access to secure AI tools for European citizens and businesses.
Despite signing, Google has voiced concerns that the AI Act and the Code could hinder AI development in Europe by slowing approvals and exposing trade secrets. This sentiment is shared by other tech companies, including Meta, which has opted not to sign the Code, citing legal uncertainties.
Google joins other signatories such as OpenAI and Mistral AI, while Microsoft has indicated it may also sign the Code soon. The EU remains firm on its regulatory stance, despite pushback from the US government and major tech firms.
