White House AI Pact Asks Companies to Police Themselves

Oct 12, 2026
A voluntary White House agreement asks advanced AI labs to follow safety protocols and monitor their own work, but does not include detailed testing or reporting requirements.

New details about the voluntary AI safety agreement signed by technology leaders at the White House show that the 308 word pact relies on companies to follow safety protocols and monitor their own work, reports The Associated Press via BNN Bloomberg.

The agreement calls for advanced AI labs to create internal monitoring teams, but does not specify testing or transparency requirements. Signatories included OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta Platforms, Inc., Google, SpaceX AI and NVIDIA.

The Trump Administration has not detailed how it will monitor compliance. The White House said it expects companies to disclose and address security incidents, while former government officials and AI safety researchers said voluntary company oversight is not a substitute for law. The Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and other companies over potential risks to consumers.
