Goldman Sachs Restricts AI Coding Tools for Traders

Nov 2, 2026
Goldman Sachs is limiting access to advanced AI coding tools for traders and bankers while retaining access for engineers and quant strategists.

Goldman Sachs is restricting access to advanced AI coding tools for many traders and bankers under internal guidelines updated in October 2026, Bloomberg News reported. The affected tools include Claude Code from Anthropic and Microsoft's GitHub, according to Crypto Briefing, which says the decision has frustrated some traders.

The bank will reserve the tools mainly for engineers. Traders had used them to monitor trades, build models and generate content. Quant strategists are exempt because their roles include programming work. Goldman said it made the changes after a trial that assessed efficiency gains, risks and controls.

Goldman continues to roll out its GS AI Assistant to about 46,000 employees and is testing agentic AI for trade surveillance and other operations. The bank also restricted access to Claude for employees in Hong Kong in April 2026 following a contract review.
