Detroit Tigers and Florida Polytechnic Partner on Player Health Models
Detroit Tigers and Florida Polytechnic University launch a research partnership focused on player health and performance, the university announced in a press release. The work will combine data science, academic research and sports analytics with the baseball club's Performance Science group.
Florida Polytechnic will appoint a full time associate professor of data science and sports analytics to work with the Tigers. The professor will also teach and help develop academic programs at the university.
Planned research includes systems that predict injury risk from injury histories, biomechanics and physical capabilities. The partners will also create individual virtual models to assess how changes to pitching mechanics could affect performance and physical stress. Florida Polytechnic students will receive exposure to sports science and data analytics through the partnership.
