Boehringer Ingelheim and Microsoft announced in a press release that they will jointly study Digital Patient Twins for clinical development. The computational models use clinical and other relevant data to predict disease progression and patient outcomes under different scenarios.

The research will cover disease progression models, outcome prediction and clinical trial simulation. The companies will examine whether the technology could support synthetic or hybrid control arms, which use existing data as an alternative or supplement to conventional clinical control groups.

The work will begin with lung health and later cover multiple diseases and therapeutic areas. The companies plan to assess technical and scientific feasibility through modeling, prototypes and evidence generation.
