Apple Acquires AI Data Engineering Startup Ascend.io
Apple closed a deal with Ascension Labs for staff and technology from AI data engineering startup Ascend.io, according to AppleInsider. The transaction closed on June 30, 2026, based on a European Union listing of significant acquisitions.
The agreement allows Apple to make employment offers to certain Ascend.io employees. Apple also receives a nonexclusive license to the startup's intellectual property rights and access to some of its patents.
Ascend.io is winding down its operations. The company provided data engineering tools to customers including News Corp, HarperCollins, Mattel and Marist. The Verge described Ascend.io as a specialist in agentic data engineering. AppleInsider noted that Apple structured recent deals for podcast tool Huxe and audio editing firm Samplab the same way, as hiring rights plus licences rather than listed acquisitions.
