Survey Finds Young Americans Want More AI Education and Better Civic Discourse
A new survey by the Sine Institute of Policy & Politics at American University highlights young Americans’ perspectives on higher education, artificial intelligence, and civic discourse, announced in a press release. The poll gathered responses from 1,214 adults aged 18 to 34 between September 5 and 13, 2025.
The results show that while 70% of respondents express confidence in higher education, affordability remains the biggest obstacle, with 69% citing cost as a primary deterrent. When asked about priorities for colleges, 61% identified developing critical thinking skills, 60% cited preparing students for the job market, and 59% emphasized accessibility.
Regarding artificial intelligence, 78% of participants said AI received little to no attention in high school, and 55% believe it could limit their career opportunities. Still, 72% view learning about AI as essential for career and life readiness. Sixty percent believe universities should hire and train qualified instructors to teach AI-related skills.
The survey also found that 69% of young Americans view the current state of civic discourse as a serious national issue. Respondents emphasized the importance of respect and open-mindedness, calling for more fact-based reporting and greater viewpoint diversity on campuses.
