OpenAI Tests Private Safety Processing for Enterprise AI Safety
OpenAI previewed Private Safety Processing for eligible API and enterprise customers, announcing on its website that the system is designed to detect misuse across related interactions while preserving Zero Data Retention.
The system extends OpenAI's current automated safety checks, which review individual interactions. Private Safety Processing is designed to identify patterns across related conversations without giving OpenAI personnel access to the underlying prompts or responses.
For Zero Data Retention deployments, customer content remains on infrastructure the customer controls. OpenAI is also developing an option where content is stored on OpenAI infrastructure and encrypted with keys controlled by the customer.
When the system identifies a risk, OpenAI receives a limited safety signal that indicates the type of activity involved. The company said customers can share relevant information with OpenAI if they want to appeal, clarify legitimate activity, or support an investigation.
OpenAI said Private Safety Processing is being tested with early customers. The company plans to start rolling it out and publish a technical white paper in September.
