USRA and Partners Release Open-Source AI Model for Extreme Weather
Universities Space Research Association's Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science, in collaboration with BCG X AI Science Institute and NASA, has announced the release of the GAIA (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence for Atmospheres) Foundation model. This open-source AI model is designed to predict and understand extreme weather events, announced in a press release.
The GAIA model was developed using 25 years of data from various geostationary weather satellites, including the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), European Meteosat (EUMETSAT), and Japanese Himawari satellites. It aims to fill gaps in satellite data coverage and improve the tracking and forecasting of tropical cyclones, atmospheric rivers, and other extreme weather phenomena.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in the partnership formed in April 2024, which combines USRA's expertise in artificial intelligence and Earth science with BCG X's advanced engineering and data science capabilities, alongside NASA's comprehensive data resources. The GAIA Foundation model is available for download on Hugging Face, reinforcing the commitment to open science and shared progress.
