University of Arizona Researchers Develop Optical Switch to Cut Data Center Energy Use

Researchers at the University of Arizona have developed a new optical switching technology, the PQT-HOS, which operates 1,000 times faster than electrical switches and uses only one-thousandth of the energy, potentially reducing data center power consumption.

Researchers at University of Arizona have developed a new optical switching technology designed to reduce energy consumption in data centers, according to a press release. The PQT-HOS optical switch is reported to be 1,000 times faster than traditional electrical switches while using only one-thousandth of the energy.

Developed by research professor Pierre-Alexandre Blanche, the PQT-HOS uses light diffraction to maintain data in optical format throughout processing. This design allows for faster data transfer and significantly lower power requirements. The technology has been patented and verified by Microsoft Corporation, UC Berkeley, and Texas Instruments.

The PQT-HOS has been peer reviewed through the University of Arizona College of Optics and is described as ready for commercial prototype development. The university expects the technology to support operators of large data centers by improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
