Saab Integrates AI in Gripen E Fighter Jet
Saab, in collaboration with Helsing, has announced the successful integration of Helsing's AI agent 'Centaur' into the Gripen E fighter jet, as stated in a press release. This milestone was achieved through Saab's 'Project Beyond', which included three test flights, the first of which took place on May 28, 2025.
During these flights, the AI agent autonomously executed complex maneuvers in a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat environment, demonstrating its capability to cue pilots for firing. The third flight, conducted on June 3, specifically tested Centaur's performance against a real Gripen D aircraft in dynamic BVR scenarios.
The project, sponsored by the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV), is part of the Swedish Concept programme for Future Fighter Systems. Saab and Helsing plan to continue analyzing flight data and training the AI to enhance its capabilities further, with additional flights scheduled for later this year.
