Newtype Industries Ends AI Artillery Software Tests in Ukraine

Nov 5, 2026
Newtype Industries ended tests of its Barbara artillery software with Ukrainian military units after its local contacts stopped responding. The company attributes the halt to a diplomatic dispute between South Korea and Ukraine, but Ukrainian officials have not confirmed a connection.

Newtype Industries ended tests of its AI enabled artillery software with Ukrainian military units in mid October, according to The Diplomat. CEO Sengwon Cho said a Ukrainian representative told the Seoul defense startup that an order had come from above to stop the work.

The Barbara software converts spoken field reports into structured messages for artillery fire direction officers. It can flag potentially incorrect coordinates or targets in civilian areas, while a person retains the final decision to fire. Newtype had planned to complete testing with two Ukrainian units in 2026.

Newtype said its Ukrainian military and local contacts stopped responding after a diplomatic dispute between South Korea and Ukraine. The company canceled planned trials, field feedback, and discussions about adoption, and stopped seeking new partners in Ukraine. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the private initiative, and there is no official confirmation that the diplomatic dispute caused the halt.
