OpenAI Partners with Broadcom to Develop AI Chips

September 05, 2025
OpenAI is collaborating with Broadcom to produce its own AI chips, aiming to reduce its reliance on Nvidia. The chips are expected to be used internally starting in 2026.

OpenAI is set to produce its own artificial intelligence chips in collaboration with Broadcom Inc., according to a report by the Financial Times. This strategic move aims to reduce OpenAI's reliance on Nvidia, whose accelerators currently dominate the AI hardware market.

The first units of these custom-designed chips are expected to be shipped in 2026. Initially, they will be deployed within OpenAI's infrastructure rather than being sold to external customers. This initiative could position OpenAI as a direct competitor to Nvidia in the AI hardware sector.

Broadcom's CEO, Hock Tan, mentioned during an investor call that the company had secured a significant production order from a new client, which aligns with OpenAI's plans. This development has led Broadcom to raise its revenue expectations for fiscal 2026.

In addition to the chip development, OpenAI has announced plans to launch an AI-driven jobs platform and certification program in partnership with Walmart, aiming to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.
