LinkedIn Data Shows Hiring Down 20% Since 2022, But AI Not the Cause Yet

LinkedIn reports a 20% decline in global hiring since 2022, but says artificial intelligence is not yet responsible for the slowdown, citing economic factors like rising interest rates instead.

Hiring on LinkedIn has fallen about 20% since 2022, but artificial intelligence is not yet the cause, according to TechCrunch. Blake Lawit, the company’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, said during an interview at Semafor’s World Economy Summit that LinkedIn’s data does not show AI-related job losses so far.

Lawit explained that LinkedIn’s economic graph, which tracks over a billion members, companies, and skills, shows no significant AI-driven effects in areas such as customer support, marketing, or administrative roles. Instead, he attributed the overall decline in hiring to higher interest rates.

He also noted that the decrease affects workers across all career stages, including recent graduates, at similar rates. However, Lawit warned that job requirements are evolving quickly, with LinkedIn data showing that the skills needed for an average job have already changed by 25% in recent years and could shift by 70% by 2030.

“Even if you’re not changing jobs, your job’s changing on you,” he said.
