Gates Foundation Joins Agentic AI Foundation

Sep 15, 2026
The Gates Foundation has become the first philanthropic organization to join the Agentic AI Foundation. The groups will support participation in agentic AI standards work by developers from underserved regions.

Agentic AI Foundation announced in a press release that the Gates Foundation has joined as its first philanthropic organization. Matt Vasey, senior advisor for AI strategy and ecosystems at the Gates Foundation, will serve on the foundation's board.

The organizations will work to include the needs of underserved communities and low income countries in the development of agentic AI technologies, standards and protocols. They also plan to expand participation in open source communities among developers from historically underrepresented regions.

The Gates Foundation will be a Diamond Sponsor of the first MCP Dev Summit in Africa, which will take place in Nairobi. It has also created a fund to help innovators from across Africa attend the event.

AAIF describes itself as the neutral home for development of the agentic stack; its founding projects include MCP, A2A, AGENTS.md, goose, agentgateway and Agent Router. The foundation launched its first certification, for MCP, earlier this month.
