Fujifilm Plans Fivefold Magnetic Tape Production Increase

Oct 30, 2026
Fujifilm plans to invest 10 billion yen to increase magnetic tape production capacity as AI data centers create more demand for long term storage.

Fujifilm plans to increase magnetic tape production capacity by as much as five times, Nikkei Asia reported, according to Tom's Hardware. The company will invest 10 billion yen, about $63.3 million, at its Odawara plant through fiscal 2028.

The expanded plant will produce advanced storage tapes with capacities of up to 100 TB per cartridge. The project represents Fujifilm's largest investment in tape storage in about 20 years.

Data centers use magnetic tape for long term backups and other information that is rarely accessed. Tape offers lower storage costs than hard disk drives and solid state drives, although it provides slower access to data.
