Cognizant Opens TriZetto Unify Platform to AI Agents for Prior Authorization

Cognizant announced in a press release that it has opened its TriZetto Unify platform to AI agents, beginning with Electronic Prior Authorization. The new headless API model allows AI agents to act as primary users of the platform while maintaining human oversight for clinical decisions.

Electronic Prior Authorization is the first TriZetto software as a service solution to expose its platform services as callable APIs without a required user interface. These APIs align with HL7 FHIR interoperability standards and handle confirmation of authorization requirements, documentation identification, and request submission.

The AI agents operate under governance and compliance controls, designed to support faster administrative workflows while leaving clinical judgment to physicians. This architecture aims to reduce delays in patient care caused by manual prior authorization processes.

Cognizant's approach extends TriZetto's clearinghouse and connectivity capabilities to include agent-ready pathways that support the Model Context Protocol used by AI systems. The company plans to expand agent access across the broader TriZetto Unify roadmap over the coming year.
