Apple Acquires AI Startup WhyLabs

This acquisition, initially reported by GeekWire, was disclosed by the European Commission under the Digital Markets Act, which mandates transparency in tech acquisitions. The deal, dated January 24, grants Apple the right to hire certain employees from WhyLabs and a license to use its intellectual property according to GeekWire.

WhyLabs, known for its AI observability tools, has discontinued operations and open-sourced its platform. The startup was valued at $37 million following a $10 million Series A funding round in 2021. The founders, including former CEO Alessya Visnjic, have taken on roles at Apple, contributing to its AI initiatives. This acquisition adds to Apple's history of acquiring Seattle-based tech startups, further expanding its engineering presence in the region.
