Ai2 Develops NeuralGCM+ Climate Model With Google Funding

Nov 4, 2026
Ai2 is developing NeuralGCM+, an open source climate model, with funding from Google.org and technical support from Google Research.

Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) is launching a climate modeling initiative with funding worth several million dollars over three years from Google.org and technical support from Google Research, as detailed in a company blog post. The project will expand Ai2's climate modeling team and support development of NeuralGCM+, an open source model for faster climate projections.

NeuralGCM+ will build on Google Research's NeuralGCM, which combines physical equations for large scale atmospheric dynamics with AI representations of processes such as clouds and rainfall. Ai2 plans to connect the atmosphere model with ocean and sea ice models to produce simulations spanning decades.

The team will test the model against historical temperature and rainfall data and assess its performance in warmer conditions not included in its training data. Ai2 also plans to release models, documented workflows and frameworks that researchers can adapt, while improving performance on widely used GPUs.
